Two teachers from VCHS have been learning about the history of the American West including the history of the Pueblo Indians from the Texas panhandle and New Mexico in preparation for a field study they will be going on this summer as part of the Landmark Moments Fellowship. Mrs. Ray and Mrs. Herbert have attended workshops this year led by Dr. Elliott West, a renowned historian on the American West at the University of Arkansas and Porter Swentzell, from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Each presenter spent two days educating a group of 48 teachers from 11 schools in southeastern Ohio.
In June, Mrs. Ray and Mrs. Herbert will travel to Amarillo, Texas and then onto Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they will continue to learn about the Pueblo Indians and their culture as part of the Westward Migration of American History. Next year, the two teachers will be eager to share what they’ve learned on their field study in the classroom. Both teachers are extremely excited about the upcoming field study that has been made possible through the Gallia-Vinton ESC and the hard work of Dr. Denise Shockley.
