Vinton County Local Schools participate in the 2017 Special Olympics at Rio Grande College

Vinton County Local Schools participated in the 2017 Special Olympics at Rio Grande College on April 28 for the first time in quite a few years. The participation of our students was a great success and there are quite a few people responsible for making this happen. We had eleven student athletes compete successfully at Rio Grande. They were Patience Ball, Ella Casdorph, Ethan Coleman, Passion Fletcher, Gage Graves, Brooke Harbor, Howard Martin, Patrick Nicholson, Jacob Remy, Zach Spears, and Hannah Sperry.

Kristen Ross, Intervention Specialist at South Elementary, volunteered at the beginning of the school year to be our Vinton County Special Olympics Coordinator and worked throughout this school year to put it all together. Other District personnel who volunteered to make this happen were Chris Eldridge, Aimee Jones, Kerry Rafferty, Tiffany Landrum, Sarah Finch, Shirley Eberts and Val Rahamut.  Vinton County High School seniors Arissa Long and Alexis Smith also volunteered to assist with the Olympics representing their school district very well.

Louanne Fowler and Janise Jones, mother and mother-in-law of Aimee Jones were kind enough to provide McDonalds Lunch for the staff and athletes during the event.

The Region 2 Business Professionals of America represented by High School Teacher Rosalie Harper, made a generous donation of $450.00 to the Special Olympic Team.

This was a great day for all who attended and competed. There were many smiles from students, parents, and teachers. Everyone is looking forward to attending and competing next spring. Thanks to all who worked to make this happen and for caring for our students

Mike Waggoner

Special Education Supervisor
