Immersion Day

December 6, 2018 - VCHS Spanish 3 and 4 students participated in a Spanish Immersion Day. Students visited the Kennedy Museum of Art in Athens, Ohio where they discussed the current exhibits in Spanish and participated in hands on activities. The first exhibit was called “A celebration of the Asylum complex's 150th anniversary.” Students got to learn about the history, see pictures, see blueprints and architectural drawings and visited newly renovated areas of the building  The next exhibit was called “Border Crossing: Video Installations.” The students got to experience two video installation works by Beirut-based Dictaphone Group on the subject of border crossings: Stories of Refuge and Nothing to Declare. Dictaphone Group is a research and performance collective that creates live art events based on multidisciplinary study of space. Here students got to discuss refugee camps and shared opinions and left messages to refugees. The last exhibit was called “A Story of Flying: 20 Years of Passion Works.” An immersive multi-media installation occupying three galleries, this exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of Passion Works Studio, a collaborative community art center encouraging people of all abilities to work and thrive within partnerships celebrating the power of creativity, connection and purpose. Here students participated in a scavenger hunt activity, created their own canvas, and discuss the art works in Spanish. Lastly, the students got to visit the studio and create their own Passion Works butterflies. To end our Immersion experience students got to eat lunch at Gran Ranchero Mexican Restaurant where they had to use their language skills to order their food and interact with the waiters. Overall, it was an amazing Immersion experience for our VCHS students!
