December Newsletter

Happy end of the First Semester! Can you believe it?  We can't!  Students and staff have been working hard to get things done to finish out this semester.  We are looking forward to our break with anticipation of finishing the year off strong!  We hope that you will enjoy the holiday break with family and friends!  We look forward to a fabulous 2019!

Attendance:
I have to admit, attendance has been rather horrible the last several weeks.  I know sickness has been running rampant and we totally understand these things cannot be helped.  Be mindful of the remainder of the year and how those sicknesses impact a child's attendance and their hours absent.  The state now counts excused and unexcused absences when calculating excessive absences (72 hours in a school year).  Keep the lines of communication open with us and let us know when your child is sick.  It is always best to get a doctor's excuse when your child is sick, but if that is not an option, please remember to send in a parent note.
Yearly Attendance:
6th: 94.4%
7th: 95%
8th: 94.6%
OVERALL: 94.6%
Our yearly goal is 94%.  With the two week break, we hope everyone is able to get well and finish out the year strong!  Help us reach our goal by ensuring your child comes to school on a daily basis!  Thank you for supporting our students and their education!

Spelling Bee
The VCMS building Spelling Bee will be on Tuesday, December 18 at 1:00 pm in the VCMS library.  Parents and grandparents are invited to attend.  Sixth grade will be going first with the seventh and eighth grade to immediately follow.  The top three finishers and one alternate from each grade will advance to the District Spelling Bee.  The District Spelling Bee will be on February 20, 2019 at 7 pm and located at Central Elementary School.

VCMS Book Club
They have completed their first book, The 5th Wave, by Rick Yancey. We will be completing our book discussions and having a pizza party and viewing the movie that was based from the book in early January. It's not too late to become involved, see Mrs. Wells if you are interested. Parent signature is required in order to participate. This has been a great opportunity for our students to promote the love of literacy.

Pictures of Convention projects should be emailed to Mrs. Macke at

Service shirts were handed out at the Beta Club meeting on December 14.

Cheese orders will be going home with students the week of Dec. 17-21. If your child turned in a cheese order, please be looking for cheese to come home with them and deliver it as soon as possible. Thank you for your orders! :)

Service logs must be turned in on or before December 21. Five service hours for the second nine weeks and a club service activity for the second nine weeks must be included on the service log. Thank you for supporting your child’s service to our schools and community the past couple months!

In order to prepare for State Convention, please allow Beta students to participate January 3, 4, and 5th when we meet at the middle school to create group and club projects. More information will be shared on Remind. Please be sure to join Remind if you haven’t already.

Thanks so much for a great first half of the year. The next seven weeks leading up to Convention will go by fast. Please ask questions and look for Remind messages to keep informed of the latest updates and reminders.
