Vinton County Local Schools
Viking Success Career Advising Program
The objective of the Viking Success Career Advising Program is to facilitate student awareness, exploration, and planning for future careers. Our goal is for every Vinton County student to graduate with a well-developed plan for life beyond high school, whether it be furthering their education or training, employment, or enlistment in the military. This plan will be the result of a multitude of meaningful experiences that culminate in a strategic plan for future career success.
How does this happen? Students in grades K-12 engage in age-appropriate activities throughout each school year that help them identify their interests, strengths, and values as they relate to the world of work, to learn about different career fields, and to develop an informed plan that helps them eventually enter the career field they desire.
Students in grades K-5 focus primarily on Career Awareness. Through age-level appropriate lessons and experiences, students learn about different types of careers and become interested thinking about options for future work.
Students in grades 6-8 focus primarily on Career Exploration; participating in activities that help them to learn more about different types of jobs and work environments, and begin thinking about how their interests, abilities, and values “match up” with different occupations. They also explore options for additional training and education as a means to reach their career goals.
Students in grades 9-12 continue exploring careers, but they also begin planning for education, employment or enlistment after high school.
Teachers, counselors, and other staff will document their Viking Success Career Advising activities in a central database that serves as both documentation of their efforts, and as a clearinghouse of ideas for other teachers to consider.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to check the Vinton County Local Schools website regularly to look for updates, pictures, and announcements about Viking Success activities.
